I want to use some existing models from Thingiverse and extend on them I've downloaded the zip file that contains the stl file but when I try to open it in Fusion I get the message: "The path <some stl file> is not a valid zip packaged " Is there any thing I am meant to do here?

Just Right Click on Feature where Exactly you want to extend or reduce one properties popup opened click Extrrud and you are good to go
